Educational Equity for Refugee Populations: A Review of Literature
Scanlan, Martin; Lopez, Francesca; Lowenhaupt, Rebecca Jane
AERA Online Paper Repository, Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (San Antonio, TX, Apr 27-May 1, 2017)
The 2017 AERA Annual Meeting theme emphasizes Achieving the Promise of Equal Educational Opportunity. Amongst the most complex issues facing schools is how to provide such opportunity to refugee populations. This paper presents a narrative synthesis (Popay et al., 2006; Rodgers et al., 2009) of empirical literature describing schools educating students who are refugees. The purpose of this study is to answer the question: What practices expand the opportunities to learn for students who are refugees? In our paper we will present the findings and discuss implications for educational leadership, particularly focused on practitioners and policymakers working with refugees.
