ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a pervasive neurodevelopment disorder that affects children in the first years of development. ASD is portrayed by unusual behaviors and impairments in social and relational abilities. Timely interventions are critical to supporting autistic children to attain essential social skills and improve the competencies they have gained. Social stories are effective interventions that teachers of children diagnosed with autism can use to manage negative behaviors and develop social skills. However, studies pertaining to the experiences of special education teachers with the implementation of social story interventions to reduce negative behaviors among preschool children with autism is lacking. This dissertation entails the examination of special education teachers' experiences in utilizing social stories' intervention to reduce negative behaviors in preschool children with autism. A basic qualitative study was used to gain insights into how special educators use social stories. The participants included certified special education instructors who teach preschool children with autism at the school under study. The investigator selected 10 participants for this study through purposive sampling. The collection of qualitative data involved the use of semistructured interviews and observations. The investigator relied on the qualitative computer-assisted software ATLAS.ti to transcribe the data. Aggression, repetitive behaviors, and difficulties in maintaining concentrations were the common behaviors exhibited by children with autism. The findings revealed that teachers have varied experiences of using social stories such as variations in the effects and the significance of social stories in decreasing negative behaviors among preschool children diagnosed with autism.
