How Do School Leaders Influence Trust Levels between Teachers and Administrators: A Case Study
Place, Ryan
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Massachusetts Lowell
While research illustrates the significance of trust in education, school leaders may often overlook the importance of trust building between teachers and administrators. In this study, five school leaders were studied to learn how they influence trust levels between teachers and administrators. The literature review investigates the effects of trust in four different areas (trust in education, trust between teachers/principals, trust between teachers'/district administrators and trust and academic achievement). The importance of trust in education and how trust between all educational stakeholders affects education is highlighted throughout the review. This research study is a mixed methods study that investigated the contextual factors that school leaders identified and used to build trust between teachers and administrators. Data was gathered from administrator surveys, individual interviews, workplace observations and survey results provided by administrators involved with the study. Findings from the study indicated that building relationships with teachers enabled school leaders to influence trust levels. Using strategies such as openness, honesty, communication, supportiveness, consistency as well as creating a positive working environment were shown to influence trust levels between teachers and school leaders in this study. Ideas for future research include investigating contextual factors that influence trust levels in larger districts, including school leaders other than principals and superintendents in studies and measuring the influence of using a trust building strategy with teachers and other school employees.
