Advancements in Rehabilitation Management: A Guide in Helping People with Mental Illness Systematically Achieve Progress
Zou, George Zhuqi
ProQuest LLC, M.S. Dissertation, California State University, Los Angeles
The percent of students with disabilities enrolled in college is substantially less than students without a disability. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the percent of the general population who hold a Bachelor's level college degree stands at 34.6% compared to only 16.4% of people with a disability (People with a disability less likely to have completed a bachelor's degree, 2015). Part of the solution to this discrepancy depends on the responsibilities of rehabilitation counselors as well as education specialists within the field of rehabilitation counseling. With the passage of the Americans Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, people with disabilities can achieve equity in finding employment in their desired industry. The purpose of this project is to pool resources together from various agencies to educate people with disabilities the means to accomplish the conferral of a Bachelor's degree and provide a pathway towards gaining meaningful employment. Upon creating a step-by-step instructional Guidebook to inform transition age youths with mental illnesses, this resource manual will be distributed to outpatient clinics, wellness centers, and other facilities deemed appropriate. The primary focus of the Guidebook is to reach underserved and underprivileged adults with disabilities in returning to a California Community College and eventually transferring to a 4-year institution.
