Understanding and Addressing Trauma-Reactive Behaviors in the Classroom: A Workshop for Teachers
Swenson, Sarah
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, William James College
The purpose of this demonstration project was to create a school-based professional development workshop to educate teachers on the impact of complex trauma on student school functioning as one element in becoming a trauma-informed school. A review of literature published on the topics of early childhood development, brain development, the impact of traumatic experiences, the school mental health movement, and trauma-informed practices was completed. Additionally, a survey of 37 current teachers was conducted in which teachers provided information on training background, student mental health issues, and preparedness in addressing these student issues. This research established a critical need to expand teacher training in order to better support students as well as improve classroom management and, therefore, informed the creation of a school-based professional development workshop. The draft of this workshop was submitted to four experts for review. Each expert reviewer provided individual feedback and critique in a semi-structured interview. The feedback was then synthesized and used to revise the workshop. The final workshop included a web-based interactive presentation with audio voiceovers, a handout version of the slides for audience members, and a facilitator's guide to expand workshop accessibility.
