Perceptions of Digital Storytelling in Pre-Licensure Nursing Education
Yocom, Danielle
ProQuest LLC, D.N.P. Dissertation, Regis College
Digital storytelling is used as an educational tool that enhances learning. Few nursing programs take advantage of this modality to learn about complex care measures. Trends in aging necessitate innovative teaching strategies to influence nursing education, practice, and the delivery of high quality nursing care. The aim of this study was to determine perceptions of digital storytelling in pre-licensure nursing education. Using a qualitative descriptive research design, the researcher held three focus groups. The digital stories were featured in class sessions related to care of the older adult coping with chronic illness and were followed by a group care planning activity with objectives based on The Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) Initiative Patient-Centered Care Competency integrating Watson's Human Caring Theory. Five themes were identified using Colaizzi's Method: (1) Giving Voice to Daily Struggles, (2) I Felt Empathy, (3) Remembering the Past, Awareness of the Present, and Planning for the Future, (4) Capturing the Human Element Through Technology, and (5) Personalizing the Learning Experience.
