Employee Perspectives: Technology as an Accommodation for Employees with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Thompson, Wendy Faye
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, New Jersey City University
People with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience higher rates of unemployment and underemployment than any other disability category. Employment may play an important role in the development of self-worth for people with ASD. Some people with ASD require workplace accommodations. Technology-based accommodations may be one solution for helping this population get and keep employment. This qualitative multiple-case study was an exploration of the lived experiences of 10 people with ASD in order to better understand the mechanisms and effectiveness of technology-based accommodations for the workplace. These technology-based accommodations may help people with ASD live more independently as they rely less on human support. The findings of this study demonstrate a need for educational outreach to inform potential users and clinicians on devices and applications. The use of informational technologies such as computers, laptops, and mobile devices have encouraged more people with ASD to utilize these devices to support limitations experienced in their work settings, including limitations related to social anxiety, communication, and processing that are required to maintain employment. Recommendations from this study encompass the development of guidelines to help facilitate the acquisition of technology-based accommodations, including identifying types and uses of technology-based accommodations. They also include assessment for the need, and the procedures for the obtainment, training, and measurement of the effective use of the provided technology-based accommodation.
