AERA Online Paper Repository, Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (San Antonio, TX, Apr 27-May 1, 2017)
This study contributes to the limited research on the implementation of pathways in a community college. While most of the literature to date focuses on providing guidance on the structural changes necessary for implementation, this study focuses on the social and cultural aspects of implementation. Using case study research design, a team of researchers examined how a pathway reform was interpreted and implemented by department chairs at one large urban community college. The findings indicate that how a practitioner interprets the reform influences the aspects of the reform they focus on and the actions they take to implement the reform. The results provide implications for both large-scale reform implementation and more specifically, for the pathway movement.
