Pitch Perfect Pronunciation: Using Classroom Karaoke as an EFL Teaching Tool
Jackson, Monica D.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Alliant International University
The focus of the classroom karaoke study was to determine if singing could help Japanese EFL students improve their English pronunciation skills. Five students from a private English language school in Japan were the main participants. They ranged in age (from 20-50) as well as in English proficiency level (from beginning to advanced). After the second lesson, one of the participants left the study due to personal circumstances. The remaining four students completed two tests both before and after a series of classroom karaoke lessons. One test measured speaking perception skills, while the other test focused on speaking production. The results showed that each of the students were able to improve their scores on the speaking perception test. The results for the speaking production test varied for each student. This study showed how classroom karaoke could potentially be used in EFL classrooms. The study also explored the roles of various factors (such as working memory and classroom environment) in attaining English speaking proficiency.
