Refining a Process: Response to Intervention as Experienced by School Administrators in the Suburbs of a Major Midwest City

As schools and districts face federal and state mandates for Response to Intervention (RTI) implementation, how do schools systematically support the implementation of RTI? Today's educators are being held accountable for providing interventions that are analogous to the medical profession. Theoretical literature is abundant on these topics and yet school administrators further develop systems for RTI by relying on one another as sources for how to implement an effective system, which is the common approach rather than referring back to literature. If RTI implementation is going to be successful, it is incumbent that school administrators provide educators with the supports necessary to work collaboratively in a problem solving system where they must be able to have an understanding of analyzing data, discussing evidence based interventions, aligning those interventions with core curriculum, implementing interventions, and evaluating the effectiveness of interventions. While school administrators can plan for appropriate professional development as it relates to many aspects of RTI, it is paramount that the building administrator(s) provide appropriate professional development, interventions for students, a collaborative problem-solving system, scheduling conducive to implementing tiered interventions, and a system for teams of teachers and administrators to evaluate those interventions. The goal behind this study is to provide the reader with administrators' experiences with implementing RTI and delineating commonalities within these experiences.
