ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The purpose of this descriptive phenomenological study was to explore the Igbo Nigerian immigrant parents' lived experience with parental involvement in education of their children in the Delaware Valley. Theoretical frameworks for this study are Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory and Ogbu's cultural systems theory. The guiding research question was: How do the Igbo Nigerian immigrant parents describe their lived experience with parental involvement in education of their children in the Delaware Valley? A criterion purposeful sampling procedure was used to recruit participants. Sixteen individuals participated in the interviews. Interviews were transcribed and analyzed through an eidetic data analysis procedure. Coding was done manually. The key research finding themes are: active participation, generational influence, respect, higher expectations, spiritual connection, sacrifice, perseverance, empowerment, motivation, connection/networking, support, communication, positive reinforcement, cultural differences, presence, and core value/beliefs. Results have the potential to provide parents and education stakeholders with ideas regarding how to take advantage of challenges and hard work to drive successes, increasing parental involvement. Also, the findings could help to achieve high expectations in the education of immigrant children. Overall, the study enhanced awareness of the studied phenomenon from the personal accounts of the participants. Key words: Nigerian Immigrant Ethnic Group, Parental Involvement, Delaware Valley, K-12 Public or Private School Education, Lived Experiences with Parental Involvement, Cultural Background and Parental Involvement, Diversity in Parental Involvement.
