Using a Virtual World as a Communication Space to Supplement an Online Course Platform for Teaching Oral Communication Skills to Adult English as a Second Language Learners
Castillo, Maria Iliana
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Texas A&M University - Kingsville
This dissertation addressed the question of how the virtual world of Second Life used in combination with a distance learning course platform contributed to improving the oral communication skills of adult learners in an English as a second language context. Over recent years, research in the field has attempted to explore the different classroom environments conducive to language learning, whether traditional or virtual. In the present study, it was discussed how oral communication skills could be improved by both the virtual world of Second Life and a distance learning course platform simultaneously, or either tool alone. Based on participants' responses, both the virtual world of Second Life and the distance learning course platform have benefits and drawbacks that must be considered when determining the suitability of these tools for language learning. Although virtual worlds as communication spaces may play a significant role in improving adult learners' listening and speaking skills, these tools have many technical drawbacks, therefore making learning difficult. Likewise, while some online course platforms are enriched with interactive multimedia elements and dynamic content to facilitate learning, these tools may impose special challenges for learners who are not digitally savvy. It was concluded that the combination of different web-based technologies in language learning can be a useful strategy to increase student engagement, enhance teaching practices, and complement the interactive elements of these tools.
