The Lived Experiences of Nuclear Medicine Technologists with Disabilities: From Education to Practice
Botkin, Crystal
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Saint Louis University
This study explored the lived experiences of nuclear medicine technologists with disabilities. A basic qualitative study was performed using one-on-one, semi-structured interviews of eight study participants. All participants were nuclear medicine technologists who identified with a disability. Interview transcripts were transcribed using an online transcription service called Temi. Member checks were employed for credibility and validity. Each interview was reviewed and coded using the constant comparative method. Five major themes emerged from the analysis of the interviews. The themes include: safety, communication, patient care and interaction, perceptions of people with disabilities, and fears and barriers of people with disabilities. Although there is a gap in the literature relating to nuclear medicine technologists with disabilities, these themes are consistent with previous literature related to other healthcare professions. The results of this study provide context to future research opportunities in the areas of technical standards, reasonable accommodations, perceptions and attitudes of people with disabilities and inclusivity of nuclear medicine technologists with disabilities.
