On the Ground: Perceptions of Strategies and Struggles in Supporting Student Success
Wayt, Lindsay K.
AERA Online Paper Repository, Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (Washington, DC, Apr 8-12, 2016)
Higher education accountability measures for student success are becoming more linked to state funding of higher education. This multiple-case study was conducted to explore and describe institutional efforts at small- to medium-sized teaching focused universities in states with performance funding policies. Specifically, the perspectives of mid-level leaders as well as student-facing faculty and staff were considered during these times of increased accountability for student outcomes. The findings of this study included themes indicating: (a) institution mission matters, (b) meaningful data is called for in decision making, (c) institution personnel are expected to be more efficient and effective, and (d) the role of leaders is paramount. These findings have implications for both research and practices but specifically have implications for senior leadership within higher education institutions.
