The Impact of Teacher Leadership on Teacher Retention
Kuhn, Christopher C.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Indiana State University
The purpose of this quantitative investigation was to examine specific factors of teacher leadership qualities to determine if a difference exists between one's teacher leadership and longevity in the teaching profession. The research study focused on the differences of six teacher leadership qualities and teacher perspectives and understanding on the overall impact on teacher retention, along with any potential confirmation of any factors pertaining to retention that might be beneficial to administrations, preparation programs, teacher recruitment, and factors that lead to teacher tenure longevity. Through this quantitative study, all practicing teachers (K-12) in Indiana public schools with five years or less of teaching experience were surveyed and the results were analyzed in regard to these six teacher leadership qualities and if the surveyed respondent was planning on staying or leaving the field of education in the next five years. Although there were no significant findings, the literature review and results from the study would provide benefit to those in the field of education. Four areas stood out from the data in the surveys: teachers being involved in curricular decisions, working with administrators to find a solution, collaboration with teachers in other corporations, and the school uses PLCs. School administrators need to develop, identify, train, and support the use of teacher leaders. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
