Teachers' and Principals' Perspectives on Leadership during International Baccalaureate School-Wide Transformation

ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Concordia University Chicago
This qualitative study was conducted using six Chicago Public schools that were transformed in to IB Wall-to-Wall schools. The study purpose was two-fold: (a) to examine how the principals' perceptions of their leadership attributes and strategies support the process of school change, and (b) to explore the teachers' perspectives on the leadership practices of their schools now that the process of IB transformation is occurring. Fourteen teachers and three principals participated in two different interview protocols. The interview questions were designed to allow the researcher to analyze the teachers' and principals' perspectives on leadership practices during the IB transformation. Five major themes resulted from the analysis of the participants' responses to the interview questions: transformation process, community support, leadership practices, decision-making, and celebrating success. Leadership attributes are personal qualities that constitute effective leadership. These attributes include an array of characteristics such as values, character, motives, habits, traits, competencies, style, behavior, and skills. The principals asserted that their leadership resulted in measurable improvements within their schools because each of their schools moved off of probationary status and are now moving in a direction of success as determined by the district. The teachers perceived that their principals' leadership practices should be more visible and more hands-on; the principals should communicate more effectively, foster positive school environments, and provide more focused instructional coaching.
