Karlin, Michael; Ozogul, Gamze; Howard, Gina; Hughes, Cheryl; Chung, Chih Han
AERA Online Paper Repository, Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (Washington, DC, Apr 8-12, 2016)
There is a current crisis in computer science teacher certification in US, which primarily centers around a growing confusion in licensure requirements. Some universities have created Computer Educator Licensure (CEL) programs to better address this confusion and to help train the next generation of K-12 computer science educators. The authors of this study conducted a program evaluation on a local university's CEL program in order to determine if the program was meeting the needs of current students, alumni, and program faculty. The authors found that current students and alumni perceived the program to be beneficial in preparing them for the job market both in terms of technology skills and marketability. The evaluation also found that the program faculty were very satisfied with their role in the program.
