Global Citizenship in the United States
Wiseman, Alexander W.; Cheng, Angel Oi Yee
AERA Online Paper Repository, Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (Washington, DC, Apr 8-12, 2016)
A long recognized key element in the creation of stable nation-states has been the state's ability to socialize youth into the role of citizen. But exactly how schooling produces global citizens and which political contexts (e.g., national political systems or a world system of nations) dominate the substance of global citizenship are not well understood. Presented here is an analysis of schooling and the political socialization of youth in a United States-specific context that begins to form answers to the fundamental questions: to what degree does schooling create citizens? And, is this socialization mostly a nation-specific or a globalized means to creating global citizenship among youth?
