Interrelations between the Supervisory and Researcher Community Support Experiences and Risk Factors among Doctoral Students

Social support from the supervisor and the researcher community has been identified as one of the determinants for successful completion of doctoral studies. The study explores interrelations between the doctoral students' supervisory experience, satisfaction with supervision, experienced burnout, time-to-candidacy, and attrition intentions. Altogether, 402 doctoral students from a Finnish university completed the quantitative survey. The results show that doctoral students who received sufficient support from both their supervisors and the research community had relatively little destructive friction during their doctoral training, were less likely to have attrition intentions, were estimated to complete their programs in a shorter time, and experienced clearly less burnout than students who lacked supervision and research community support.
