Media and Information Literacy in Teacher Education: Preservice Teachers' Perspectives
Gretter, Sarah; Yadav, Aman
AERA Online Paper Repository, Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (San Antonio, TX, Apr 27-May 1, 2017)
Given the increasing role of digital media in students' lives, Media & Information Literacy (MIL) is increasingly viewed as set of competencies that students should possess in today's digital world. Teachers need to help students understand the functions of media and become critical users of the information that they encounter on a daily basis. This study examined preservice teachers' views of MIL and its implications for their pedagogical practices. The authors found that while teachers recognized the essential role of educators in embedding MIL practices in their instruction, they lack adequate training to incorporate MIL in their own pedagogy. They discuss the implications of our findings for preparing teachers in MIL education and suggest directions for future research in this area.
