M-Learning: A Qualitative Study of Characteristics That Lead to Knowledge/Skill Attainment Using Mobile Devices
Dungy, Kimberlea
ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, Capella University
Mobile devices have evolved from being a simple tool for communication to an indispensable "appendage." Mobile devices link users to various applications, cameras, virtual and offline communities that we depend on daily. Mobile devices have impacted the way post-secondary and adults learn in higher educational settings. Mobile learning (M-Learning) is defined as portable learning that takes place literally anytime and anywhere, using hand-held, Internet-based devices that can fit in a purse or a pocket. The impact of M-Learning and post-secondary and adult learning engagement is presumed to be positive. However, there is no solid data that provide facts on the specific M-Learning activities or characteristics of these executed activities. The purpose of this qualitative research is to investigate and define what post-secondary and adult learners identified as key attributes and characteristics that led to skill building and knowledge attainment using mobile devices. The data for this study was collected using an online qualitative questionnaire consisting of 20 questions targeted toward post-secondary adult learners, ranging in age from 18 to 55. After analysis of the data, two themes emerged: (a) age and perception of mobile devices as learning tools, and (b) common characteristics of mobile devices used as an instructional tool that led to skill or knowledge attainment. Participants in this study overwhelmingly used Apple mobile devices over Android devices. Apple iPhones and iPads were used 100% by the younger age group (18-30), 80% in the 31-40 age group, and 75% of the 41-55 age group. While each generation identified unique applications or tools that defined how learning occurred, the top two of the three tools utilized to obtain learning or skills using mobile devices were the same across the board. This information is contrary to the limited articles found on Mobile Learning and Higher Education. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
