Oppression, Liberation, and Somatic Manifestations of Trans Youth in Schools: A Phenomenological Analysis
Truax, Heidi A.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Adler School of Professional Psychology
This dissertation explores the somatic manifestations of trans youth and the process by which those manifestations are developed through oppressive experiences in schools. The phenomenological inquiry of two co-researchers (i.e. participants), which utilized open ended phenomenological questions on specific moments of oppression, addresses a gap in the literature specific to trans youth with somatic manifestations. Results of this study explore the bodily and emotional impact that oppressive experiences in schools have on trans youth, and highlights suggestions from co-researchers to clinicians on how to assist in healing and prevention. Frameworks foundational to this inquiry include conceptions from the model of cultural oppression and liberation and somatic psychology.
