Birds of a Different Feather: A Multicase Study of U.S. Undergraduate Students' Friendships with International Students
Wrightsman, Karen R.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, George Mason University
This qualitative, multicase study examined U.S. undergraduate students' experiences and perspectives of their friendships with international students and the meaning they attributed to these relationships. The research questions guiding this study were: (1) What is the nature of interactions between U.S. and international students from the perspective of U.S. undergraduate students? (2) From the perspective of U.S. undergraduate students, how do U.S. and international students form friendships with one another? (3) What are U.S. undergraduate students' experiences of these friendships and how do they make meaning of those friendships? The 11 U.S. undergraduate student participants were selected using purposeful sampling and represent different genders, class standings, and majors. All were students at the same public, doctoral-granting university located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Participants completed an online preliminary questionnaire and participated in two individual, semistructured interviews. The within-case and cross-case analysis revealed several findings about the elements that fostered friendships between these U.S. students and international students. The themes related to timing, location, initial interaction, transition, activities, demographics, commonalities, differences, and categorization. However, there was no singular element that fostered friendships between these U.S. students and international students because their interactions and friendships were nuanced and contextual. Recommendations are offered for the use of strategic messaging and the implementation a peer-pairing intervention program.
