The Student Athlete College Experience: Stress, Coping, and Resilience
Norman, Marissa
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, William James College
This study was a qualitative exploration of the experience of student athletes at the collegiate level, using a phenomenological methodology. Through focus group interviews, athletes discussed their experiences of stress, their coping mechanisms, and resilience. A total of four focus group interviews were conducted with 17 undergraduate collegiate athletes from the University of Rhode Island representing a variety of sports (i.e., swimming, rowing, track and field, basketball, golf, football). Participants' age ranged from 18-22 (M = 20, SD = 1.5). All interview transcripts were transcribed verbatim, categorized, and coded which led to the identification of 4 themes, each of which was then divided into several subthemes. These four themes characterized these athletes' experience as student athletes: "Stress, Coping, Resilience, and No Regrets." The findings from this study contribute to the field as it expands current research regarding the experience of student athletes. Furthermore, the findings can be used for athletic departments, university faculty members that work with student athletes, and stakeholders in understanding student athlete's experiences. The application from the data may contribute to decreasing stress and aid in the development of healthy coping skills and resilience of student athletes.
