The Effects of an Experimental SEL-Based Alternative to out of School Suspension Program for Middle School Students

The purpose of this study was to determine if an experimental Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) based alternative discipline policy paired with a community-school partnership, effects suspended students' subsequent suspension incidents. Data were collected from four Midwestern school districts participating in an experimental Alternative to Out of School Suspension (ATOSS) program for middle school students. Suspended middle school students could either serve an Out of School Suspension (OSS) or attend an experimental ATOSS program at a community youth development organization. Students attending the experimental ATOSS program received SEL-based supports intended to create positive outcomes for students such as less subsequent suspension incidents. The purposive sample of this study consisted of 330 students resulting in 539 suspension cases uniquely coded by the participating Midwestern school districts. Data were analyzed through binomial logistic regression analyses. The results indicated a significant relationship when associating students with an IEP and an increase in subsequent suspension incidents, p <0.001, regardless of the suspension method (ATOSS or OSS). The results also indicated a significant relationship among students attending the experimental ATOSS program and an increased likelihood of subsequent suspension incidents for other race students, p <0.005, and students with an IEP, p <0.005. Finally, descriptive statistics demonstrate a trend that the ATOSS program may be working to decrease subsequent suspension incidents, but additional studies are required to evaluate the significance of this trend.
