Exploring the Experiences of African American Males Seeking Leadership Positions within the Field of Higher Education
Holliday, Carlos B.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Trevecca Nazarene University
The study reveals the experiences of African American Males (AAM) as they entered and proceeded through the leadership pipeline in higher education. AAM continue to be underrepresented in leadership positions in higher education at Predominantly White Institutions (PWI) and the challenge is how to overcome the barriers to obtain the opportunity to enter the pipeline to leadership in higher education. The researcher interviewed nine African American males by phone and face to face meetings. Four overriding themes emerged out of the interviews conducted: Pipeline Barriers, Mentorship, and Discriminative practices. The results from the themes showed that there must be a shared responsibility between AAM and the leadership at PWI's in order for a change to take place in the future.
