Suicide-Related Knowledge, Exposure, and Self-Reported Helping Skills in College Students, Faculty, and Staff
MacDonald, Michael G.; Smith, Julia B.; Hawley, Lisa; Wallace, Erica; Wren, Patricia
AERA Online Paper Repository, Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (Washington, DC, Apr 8-12, 2016)
Suicide and suicidal behavior among college students represents a significant public health concern for which various preventative interventions have been developed (Arria et al., 2009; Drum, Brownson, Denmark, & Smith, 2009; Westefeld et al., 2006). This study examined suicide intervention self-efficacy and the relationship with knowledge about suicide and suicide prevention resources. Using data from a campus-wide survey, the findings revealed important intersections between these three components, with knowledge about resources serving as a necessary condition for other mechanisms. These findings offer important insights to colleges and universities engaged in improving their campus climate in response to suicide.
