Barner, Shakitha Nicole
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wingate University
The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to investigate the representation of African American female community college executive leaders in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Factors that played a role in the growth and development of these leaders on their professional journey were identified. The study also explored initiatives African American female leaders are taking to help support and develop future African American female leaders. The researcher used the Community College Female Administrator Survey and conducted semi-structured interviews. Data were gathered from 17 African American women. The findings of this study revealed that African American women hold eight percent of the executive leadership positions at community colleges in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Participants indicated childhood/background, mentoring, professional development, and networking all played a role in their growth and development as leaders. To assist in building future leaders, all participants serve as mentors to women, specifically African American women.
