Adult Learners' Experiences in Applying Self-Regulation Skills in an Online College Program
Tremblay, Lisa
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
This generic qualitative research study was designed to explain the benefits associated with applying self-regulation skills such as time management, being organized, staying focused, and prioritization, to avoid dropping out of an online college program. The theoretical framework for this study is social cognitive theory and self-regulation theory. Participants ranged in age from 35-50 years old. The data collection consisted of face-to-face or phone, semi-structured interviews with nine adult learners who participated in an online course in their associate's or bachelor's degree program. The data analysis followed a selective coding process and formulated the nine primary themes: time management, decision making, being focused, goal-driven, prioritization, institutional/situational obstacles, self-advocacy, support/encouragement, and self-awareness. The data analysis also identified that when these skills were applied, learners were able to feel more in control and developed strategies to overcome obstacles to avoid dropping out of college. Implications for practice are discussed, and recommendations for further research are made. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
