Wells, Kim
ProQuest LLC, Ed.S. Dissertation, Brenau University
Students nationwide demonstrate poor reading comprehension scores. Poor reading comprehension can hinder an individual's life from school age and through adulthood. Because of this, it is the goal of many educators as well as many school systems to improve student achievement in reading comprehension. The purpose of this study was to find a method of reading instruction that consistently reports an increase in reading comprehension scores. This study helped determine if guided reading groups used in conjunction with the Renaissance Learning program improved student reading comprehension scores. Components of Renaissance Learning program was used during this study and included the STAR reading test, along with Accelerated Reader tests, in conjunction with a guided reading program. The results of this study reported that reading comprehension scores as well as reading fluency scores did show a consistent increase while using the Renaissance Learning program in conjunction with guided reading groups.
