The Missing Peace: Development of a Parent Training for Bullying Prevention among Elementary School-Aged Children
Nick, Claire E.
ProQuest LLC, Ps.D. Dissertation, Widener University
Bullying and peer victimization are prevalent concerns among educators, psychologists, and families alike. In recent years, research has indicated an increasing prevalence of bullying incidents among elementary school-aged children, with growing concerns about the long-term effects of bullying involvement on bullies, bully-victims, victims, as well as on bystanders. Though many bullying prevention programs exist and are being implemented across the United States, little is known regarding their effectiveness for lasting change. Additionally, despite research on child development and within the field of home-school partnerships, which strongly supports the notion that parents matter in instances when a child is bullying others or being victimized, few intervention programs offer a parent component or fully acknowledge the social-ecological systems at play. This dissertation aims to address this gap. By outlining the process of developing a parent training on bullying prevention, the hope is to provide a research-informed guide for educators and/or key community stakeholders to implement within their school districts. In addition, a sample PowerPoint presentation is provided, which offers both formatting and wording suggestions for directly delivering important information to parents. Both products of this dissertation have been designed with a strong, collaborative home-school partnership in mind.
