Exploring the Relationships of Principal Preparation Programs and Leadership Styles on School Accountability Indices
Smith, Christy Lynn
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Our Lady of the Lake University
The purpose of this research is to contribute to the body of knowledge on the impact of principal preparation programs and principal leadership style as measured by the MLQ-5X Short or Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire. Furthermore, this study seeks to examine principal preparation programs and leadership styles and their relationship with School Accountability Indices as measured by the Texas Education Agency or (TEA). As a reaction of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) being implemented to increase student achievement of all students (Styron & Styron, 2011), the accountability of education leaders began to increase massively. Unfortunately, leaders in education have continued to fail at meeting the standards established by state and federal levels even though accountability has been in effect for several years (Dillon, 2010; Styron & Styron, 2011). As these dynamics continue to take place, so does the necessity in reformulating principal preparation programs, as it exists. Participants for this study were principals taken from various districts in the state of Texas. Along with the MLQ-5X, principals completed a demographics survey, which asked for information such as gender, age, ethnicity, tenure, principal preparation program attended, and School Accountability Rating of their campus. Additional information pertaining to the campus and the School Accountability Indices was provided online through TEA. Although findings in this study suggested that there was no relationship with principal preparation programs and leadership style, there were significant findings found between tenure and the School Accountability Indices of Student Achievement and Closing Performance Gaps. Also, findings between Transformational leadership style and Postsecondary Readiness should be studied further in future research.
