The Association between Pre-Admission Requirements on Program Completion of Radiography Students
Finnel, Kristen M.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Edgewood College
With the projected radiography healthcare worker shortfall, improved program completion is essential in order to meet workforce needs. The purpose and the specific research question addressed in this study was "Is there an association between completing the pre-admission requirements prior to beginning core radiography courses and Radiography student's program completion?" This quantitative study consisted of gathering data on 96 radiography students at a Midwestern Technical College from Fall 2008 through Fall 2014. Data on covariates were collected and compiled into two categories. Student Characteristics (C) variables which included: gender, age, and timing of matriculation (2008-2011 students took pre-admission criteria during, 2012-2014 students took pre-admission criteria prior); Student Effort (E) variables included: final grades in anatomy, math, English and program completion. The study results showed that the timing of matriculation and final grades in Anatomy and Physiology did not have a significant association with a student's program completion. However, the findings showed that final grades in Math and English had a significant association with the likelihood of successful program completion. By examining variables that impact program completion, educational leaders can design, promote, and implement interventions to increase the likelihood of student success.
