Utilization of Integrated Behavioral Health Care among College Campuses

The integration of behavioral and medical health is a model of care that has been around for decades within hospitals, primary care and residential care settings. Yet, on college campuses the degree of this integration is not well studied. There are many college-aged students attending college with chronic illnesses and the management of their integrative care seems relatively unknown in the literature. It has been well documented that students are coming to college counseling centers with long standing histories of behavioral health treatment. Literature also supports that college students use university health centers at much higher rates than counseling or behavioral health services. This study assessed the degree to which integrative healthcare is currently being used in college health centers. This study surveyed directors of university health centers and included measures to assess awareness and implementation of integrative care models in the participants' health centers, extent of integration of responding institution, location, institution size, health center size and student demographics. The key finding of this study validated the importance of colocating counseling services and health services.
