North American Chapter of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the North American Chapter of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education (33rd, Reno, NV, Oct 20-23, 2011)
Probabilistic misconceptions are common among students and teachers alike. This study involved 18 preservice secondary mathematics teachers and documents some of the common probabilistic misconceptions held by these preservice teachers. Data was collected through a survey involving eight probability problems and two semi-structured interviews. Findings indicate that the most common misconception held by these preservice teachers related to time axis, compound events, and availability. [For the complete proceedings, see ED585874.]
