Summers, Tara
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, Roosevelt University
Roosevelt University's Black Male Leadership Academy is an educational and youth development program for Chicago Black male high school students that includes both a weeklong Residential program at Roosevelt University's downtown Chicago campus and monthly "Second Saturday" meetings. The program includes several components that aim to build participating students intellectual, cultural, and social capital. This study investigated the impact of the BMLA on participating student's self-efficacy, racial identity, and life satisfaction during the 2015-2016 year. Quantitative and qualitative research methods were used, including survey data and focus groups. Results indicated that participants' self-efficacy, racial identity, and life satisfaction appeared to be impacted by their involvement in the BMLA. The areas of the BMLA that had the most impact on these domains include field trips, college preparation, college level courses, mentoring opportunities, and exposure to Black professionals.
