ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Lamar University - Beaumont
The purpose of this bounded case study was to explore beliefs and strategies of incorporating physical activity during the school day as perceived by third and fourth grade elementary school teachers in one Texas school district. Third and fourth grade teachers with a minimum of one year of experience from six different elementary schools participated in the study. Major findings included study participants believe students need physical activity during the school day to improve behavior and that students should participate in physical activity during the school day to promote health. However, study participants do not believe they have enough instructional time during the school day to provide the amount of physical activity they believe children need and they are unclear about legal requirements set forth by the Texas Education Agency for how much time a child in third or fourth grade should receive physical activity on a daily or weekly basis. In addition, despite knowing the advantages of incorporating physical activity into the school day, the pressure for students to perform on the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness drives teachers to make decisions to cut out physical activity to ensure academic needs are met.
