Recognizing the Signs and Symptoms of Youth and Adolescents That Experience Mental Health Problems and/or Crises

Health First Aid at the Philadelphia Red Cross completed a survey with information pertaining to knowledge and confidence in recognizing the signs and symptoms of youth/adolescents that may be experiencing a mental health problem and or crisis. Descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, ANOVA, and Tukey tests were conducted to investigate the level of confidence, knowledge, and information participants had in regard to recognizing the signs and symptoms of youth/adolescents that may be experiencing a mental health problem and/or crisis. The implications in this study can be extended to educational training programs as well as areas of future research. This study found that the level of confidence for recognizing the signs and symptoms of youth/adolescents that may be experiencing a mental health problem and or crisis to be high. Furthermore, the study revealed that the training should be mandatory for anyone working in an academic setting with youth/adolescents including parents, guardians, and caregivers.
