The Pursuit of Equality: Retaining Women in Information Technology
Ehlert, Teresa
ProQuest LLC, Psy.D. Dissertation, The University of the Rockies
This qualitative study employed a three-iteration classical Delphi design to determine consensus regarding retention strategies of women in the IT industry. There is a call for the information technology (IT) industry to hire and retain more women. Retaining such a valuable educated source would help fill the ever-rising need for skilled workers in the IT industry. The problem is that women leave the IT industry within the first few years of employment. A review of the litereature has shown there is no clear consensus in the industry or among experts regarding reasons women stay. The research question guiding the study was "What do you consider best practices of retaining women in the IT community?" Three sub-questions complimented the primary research question included 1) Why do you feel women leave the IT community within a short period of time? 2) Why do you feel women who leave choose another career path? 3) Why do you feel women stay in the IT community? The panel determined that implementing flexible work hours and more training and development opportunities would help retain women in the IT community. Women leave the industry primality due to no advancement opportunities and unequal pay. The primary reason women chose another career path was higher earning potential with a work-life balance. Finally, motivation to remain in the industry is that women love the work. An internal drive for great satisfaction and excellence drives the persistent appeal. This study lays the foundation for further research. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
