ProQuest LLC, D.C.S. Dissertation, Colorado Technical University
The goal of this research was to discover a list of changes that can be applied to IT security certifications to enhance the day-to-day capabilities of IT security professionals. Background: IT security professionals are often required to obtain certifications that do not adequately prepare them for the full scope of work that will be necessary for their positions. Department of Defense Directive 8570 provides guidance and procedures for the training, certification, and management of all government employees who conduct cybersecurity functions in assigned duty positions. The goal of this research was to discover a list of changes that can be applied to IT security certifications to enhance the day-to-day capabilities of IT security professionals. Method: The research method and design was a qualitative, exploratory study in which six IT professionals who work in positions requiring a DoD clearance or individuals who work at organizations that require 8570 compliance. Finding: More than 50% of respondents expressed that their certifications do not have a bearing on their careers suggests that those same professionals can do their jobs effectively without having gone through the certification process. Overall Conclusion: The participants did not think information security certifications were more beneficial to them than understanding how to do their job. Future research might include a wider population or range of certifications to get an even greater breadth of experiences and suggestions for enhancements.
