Minority Male Mentoring: A Program Evaluation
Deas, Antoine T.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wingate University
This study analyzed the effectiveness of a minority male mentoring program at a public two-year institution of higher education in South Carolina. To assist in investigating the successfulness of African American males at the institution, data regarding graduation rates, grade point averages, developmental course completion, and campus involvement from 2001-2015 was analyzed to determine if African American males who participate in a minority male mentoring program are more successful than African American males not in a minority male mentoring program. Data sources for this study included a focus group of African American males in the minority male mentoring program and one-on-one interviews with African American males not in the minority male mentoring program. As African American males continue to enroll in institutions of higher education, two-year institutions must evaluate support services to determine if African American males are being prepared to become academically successful. Results indicated no significant difference in grade point averages and developmental course completion rates, but a significant difference in African American male retention.
