Developing Academic Advisement Fit for First-Generation Latina(O) College Students at a Large Urban Institution
Barco Quinonez, JennyErika M.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, California State University, Los Angeles
By using two major areas of scholarship drawn from Student Development Theory, this qualitative case study examined first-generation Latina(o) college students in a large urban institution and their experiences with academic advisement applying Transition Theory, based on the work of Schlossberg (1981; 1995) and expanded upon by Goodman, Schlossberg, and Anderson (2006). The second area is Latino ethnic identity theory guided by Torres (2003). Most First-generation Latina(o) college students will transition into higher education during the fall term, and will take part in the new Student Orientation Program; where administrators, faculty and professional staff will officially welcome them into institutions. As students are being introduced into the college environment is it critical to be aware of the different changes and challenges some first-generation Latina(o) college students will encounter which will conflict with their culture, traditions, academic preparedness, and multi-identities.
