Identifying Effective Student Success and Engagement Practices among Latino/a Students to Increase Graduation Rates: A Case Study
Smith, Karina
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northcentral University
Latino/as are the fastest growing population in the United States and have the second lowest graduation rate among all demographics. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to gain a better understanding of the barriers affecting Latino/a success as well as exploring self-identified engagement strategies leading to Latino/a student first year to second year persistence. Participants were current students, former students, and administrators of the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP). Data were gathered through face to face interviews, surveys, and through examination of program documents including, reported data, syllabi, and program evaluations. Results suggested that policies and procedures at the institution did not present significant barriers for participants to complete their degree. In addition, the results suggested the CAMP program provided significant engagement strategies that were allowing Latino/a migrant farmworkers to be retained from year one to year two. Recommendations include: further exploration into higher education systems regarding policies, process, and procedures and how they affect Latino/a students, examination of the different types of higher education systems and how they support Latino/a students, and a further development of high impact student engagement strategies designed for the needs of Latino/a students.
