Pre-K Now
Even as states across the United States make impressive progress toward providing pre-kindergarten for all three and four year olds, many children in urgent need of high-quality early education still lack access. As states look to expand pre-k by first targeting those with the greatest need, policymakers should consider how the children of the nation's military personnel are affected when their parents serve the country. Children in military families, like their civilian peers, benefit from the social, emotional, and academic skills pre-k fosters, and military families need consistent access to pre-k in all states to smooth the unique and frequent transitions they face. This 2007 report recommends that state policymakers should help the children of the nation's military personnel meet the unique challenges of the military lifestyle by providing them with high-quality Pre-K.
