The Impact of Online Programs Used as a Home Resource to Improve Student Achievement in Mathematics in Low-Achieving Students in a Large Chicago Suburban High School
Shanahan, Anne
ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, University of St. Francis
The purpose of this quasi-experimental ex post-facto mixed methods study was to investigate the impact of an online homework program on the academic growth of students in the area of mathematics. For this study, achievement in a specific mathematics course, Plane Geometry, was studied to determine the impact of using an online homework method instead of traditional pencil and paper homework. The study took place in a large southwest suburban high school district in the Chicago suburbs. The study took place in a school district comprised of four high schools, although the study took place in only two of the high schools. This particular high school district had five elementary feeder school districts, however, for the purpose of this study the students attended the same feeder district. Data were collected over the course of one school year from students with similar achievement history in the area of mathematics. The study compared the achievement of the students who utilized the online math program for homework with the students who used traditional pencil and paper homework assignments. Growth was measured in terms of achievement on standardized tests, skill aligned district final exams, and semester grades. Data were disaggregated to show the achievement levels between students utilizing the online program and those who used traditional homework methods. In addition to quantitative data, teachers were surveyed regarding their use and opinions of using the online program.
