It's a Major Decision: The Process of Choosing a Major by First Generation College Students in a Scholarship Program
Burnett, Rebeca Inali
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Biola University
First-generation college students (FGCS) are a unique group and face their own set of unique challenges when they start college. For example, they may need support in basic campus navigational skills or help communicating with professors. Existing research on FGCS tends to examine topics such as socioeconomic backgrounds and graduation rates. Another area of study has been the choice of major. Although choice of major is an important step for college students, little study has been done to understand how FGCS choose a major. A student's major, or field of study, often determines their struggles, and ultimately, success in college and has significant implications for their professional life after graduation. This study sought to help fill the gap in knowledge about how FGCS in particular choose their major. This constructivist grounded theory study explored the influences and motivations that led FGCS to choose their major. The participants were members of an inaugural first generation scholars program, a scholarship program for FGCS at a private, Christian university on the West Coast. Data was generated through the use of interviews, written narratives, and focus groups with twenty-three participants from diverse backgrounds. The author conducted three focus groups with those who consented to participate in the study. One group consisted of traditional, first year freshmen and two groups consisted of transfer students. In addition to focus group participation, students were asked to write a piece detailing their anticipated major and motivations in choosing said major. The central understanding that emerged is that choice of major is a process rather than a single measurable factor. These students exhibit a strong awareness of a self-affirming internal voice, coupled with affirmation of their perceived calling by the external voices of their family and church, leading them to choose a major which will equip them to impact their communities through their chosen field of study. Implications for colleges, churches, communities, and families are discussed. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
