Experiences That Influenced First-Generation Student Post-Secondary Enrollment and Persistence: A Phenomenological Study
Johnson, Rochelle W.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of South Alabama
The researcher conducted an applied research study that led to a dissertation in practice. This research study allowed the researcher to identify the experiences perceived by first-generation college students as relevant to college enrollment and persistence. The study used a transcendental phenomenological approach to determine the relationship between pre-college support program participation and college enrollment and persistence for first-generation college students. The goal of the study was to have an impact on educational practice by seeking to understand and address problems in ways that are accessible and useable to diverse stakeholders. Qualitative data was collected using demographic surveys and individual interviews. The findings from the research show that the factors with the most impact on participants' college enrollment and persistence were mental preparation (attitude), college exposure, support systems in place to help, academic support and being around like minded peers. The results of the findings, recommendations for further research and leadership implications were discussed.
