When in Doubt, Put Them Out: Principal Perspectives on Suspension as a Disciplinary Practice

The subject of school discipline is one of the most critical issues facing our educational system. Disruptive student behavior interrupts teaching and learning processes and if not effectively addressed, it can manifest itself in other areas in a child's life, leading to more serious behaviors which may eventually lead to criminal involvement, substance abuse or death. There is no national standard for dealing with discipline issues in schools, so principals must develop discipline strategies that are most appropriate for their students. The problem this study addressed was how the use of out-of-school suspensions as an effective disciplinary practice by high school principals for high school students had an adverse effect on students in the short and long terms. The purpose of this qualitative, multiple case study was to examine the perspectives of high school principals as to whether out-of-school suspensions were an effective disciplinary practice for high school students. Data analysis revealed the themes around: (a) effectiveness in remediating behavior short-term; (b) effectiveness in remediating behavior long-term; (c) impact on remaining students; (d) lack of support from student caregivers; and (e) behavioral issues beyond staff expertise. Recommendations for future research included: (a) considering a larger sample that could include principals in different states and those who serve in private or parochial schools; (b) considering including a quantitative study that would provide empirical proof of the outcomes derived from out-of-school suspensions; (c) considering the similarities and differences among other disciplinary strategies to determine whether any of these strategies would yield better academic and social outcomes for high school students.
