IT Software Development and IT Operations Strategic Alignment: An Agile DevOps Model
Hart, Michael

Information Technology (IT) departments that include development and operations are essential to develop software that meet customer needs. DevOps is a term originally constructed from software development and IT operations. DevOps includes the collaboration of all stakeholders such as software engineers and systems administrators involved in the automation, development, testing, and rapid delivery of software to market. This study proposes the DevOps IT Alignment Model (DOITAM). DOITAM includes three factors that IT software development and IT operations subunits historically have challenges. This includes continuous integration of software code, cross-functional collaboration, and knowledge sharing. Review of related literature reveals possible theoretical connections of these DevOps philosophies to the resource-based view of the firm and the social capital theory. It explores whether these factors contribute to the strategic alignment of IT subunits that practice DevOps via a quantitative research approach. Using a sample of 170 IT professionals from global 2000 United States organizations, the DOITAM model results show sufficient fit and degree of explanatory power. Empirical results are mixed but indicate that continuous integration of software code and cross-functional collaboration positively and significantly correlate with IT subunit alignment of IT development and IT operations departments practicing DevOps. In contrast, knowledge sharing does not result in the subunit alignment of the departments. The findings indicate that IT units practicing DevOps in global 2000 U.S. firms have certain strategic subunit alignment capabilities through cross-functional collaboration and continuous integration of software.
