Middle School Educators Describe the Process of Revitalization after Having Experienced Burnout
Terreros, Angela W.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
The need to understand burnout and revitalization among educators is increasing. In the United States, approximately 46% of all new educators leave the profession within the first five years, and many blame burnout as the reason they leave the profession. While many researchers study to understand the burnout phenomenon, few press on to understand the revitalization process. This grounded theory research attempted to understand the process of revitalization that middle school educators go through after having experienced burnout. This study included 15 participants, 14 females and 1 male. All of the participants currently teach regular education middle school students. Methods included semi-structured interviews, member checking, and journal documentation to obtain information from middle school educators who have experienced the process of revitalization. The findings contribute to limited information known about the revitalization process of middle school educators. The findings also identify future areas where research is needed.
